About Arlington Park
There was a time when Chicago was the center of horse racing in the United States, with no fewer than six tracks in operation. There are now only four tracks in the Chicagoland area; the greatest of these, and one of the best tracks you’ll find anywhere, is Arlington Park in the tony Arlington Heights suburb.
Arlington Park has been at the forefront of horse racing since opening in 1927. They had the first public-address system at a racetrack and the first race caller, Clem McCarthy. Arlington Park was also the first track with an electric starting gate (1940) and trifecta betting (1971).
In 1981, the first ever million-dollar stakes was held here: the Arlington Million, won by John Henry with Bill Shoemaker as the jockey. A bronze statue memorializing this event can be seen on top of the paddock. The Arlington Million (10 furlongs, turf) is one of three Grade 1 stakes races at Arlington Park; this is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge event with the winner earning a spot in the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The racetrack as we know it today was re-built from the ground up after a devastating fire in 1985. In addition to the one-mile turf oval, Arlington Park features a 10-furlong oval that switched from dirt to Polytrack for the 2007 season – making this the first track in the Midwest (and just the fifth in North America) to install a synthetic surface. Nothing but the best for Arlington Park.
