Antonio Margarito vs. Shane Mosley Antonio Margarito versus Shane Mosley Welterweights Staples Center, Los Angeles, California January 24, 2009   In the first of what figures to be several pretty fights over the next 90 days, Antonio Margarito (37-5) defends his welterweight title against cagey veteran Sugar Shane Mosley (45-5). Margarito, fresh off signature win over Miguel Cotto in July, is a prohibitive -400 favorite. Mosely will be fighting in his own backyard and +275 at Bodog on the take back. The over/under20us 10.5 rounds with the over -140, the under is even money.   The biggest question in this fight is, how much does Shane Mosley have left in the tank ???  At 37, Mosley’s been there, done that. He’s fought a lot of rounds in many big fights and faces a younger heavy handed hitter that seemingly improves each outing.   Mosley’s best strategy would be to do his damage early and try to get Margarito out quickly. That’s easier said than done. Margarito is a notorious slow starter but is absolutely fearless and relentless once he’s broke a sweat. Margarito is a grinder that pounds away and breaks down his opponents body and will.   Sugar Shane has never been taken out but tonight, that’s a very real possibility. All five Mosely losses have come by decisions, twice to Vernon Forrest, twice to Winky W right, and most recently to Miguel Cotto. In his last fight, Sugar Shane was not sharp and in fact life and death to take out a glass jawed used up Ricardo Mayorga in the 12th.   Local Capper Dave Cokin made a great point on his show this week when he equated Mosley’s win over Mayorga to Oscar De La Hoya’s win over Steve Forbes. Both guys won, neither looked sharp, both looked old ….. we saw what happened to Oscar when he similarly faced a young lion.   Could Mosley pull a Bernard Hopkins ???  Possible but not likely. Not much value in Margarito at -400 but you can get Margarito by KO at +140 and that’s the way I’m looking 48 hours out. Should be a great fight that’s well worth watching. TiVo with Affliction and you’ll be in fight heaven.   For the record, Margarito in eight !!!
