The Los Angeles Angels are quickly falling out of the playoff picture, while the Houston Astros continue to try and catch the Cleveland Indians for the best mark in the American League. The Angels try to avoid a season-worst seventh straight defeat when they conclude their season series in Houston with the Astros on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Los Angeles’ bats remained cold in Saturday’s 6-2 loss, scoring three runs or fewer for the fifth time during their losing streak, as Justin Upton provided all the offense with two solo homers. Not only did the Angels fall two games below .500 for the first time since August 8th, they dropped 4.5 games behind Minnesota for the AL’s second wild-card berth. The Astros won for the seventh time in eight games to remain 1.5 back of Cleveland for the AL’s best record, scoring all five of their fifth-inning runs after the first two batters were retired. Evan Gattis capped the rally off by launching a three-run homer. With its next victory, Houston will tie the 1986 team for the third-most wins (96) in a single season in club history.

Pitchers: Angels – Tyler Skaggs (2-6, 4.30 ERA) | Astros – Lance McCullers Jr. (7-3, 3.97)

Tyler Skaggs has been inconsistent since returning from the disabled list on August 5th, going 1-5 after allowing two runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings against Cleveland on Tuesday. After going 0-3 with a 5.86 ERA over his first five outings, Skaggs has been much sharper across his last three, posting a 2.45 ERA. Jose Altuve is 5-for-14 against Skaggs, who recorded his only victory since his lengthy stint on the disabled list when he shutout Houston over seven innings on September 13th.

Lance McCullers will take the mound for the first time since early September due to arm fatigue. He is winless in his last six outings and did not factor in the decision in his last start at Seattle nearly three weeks ago. Albert Pujols is 4-for-20 with a home run and Mike Trout 1-for-15 with a homer against McCullers, who has allowed only one unearned run over 13.2 innings in two starts versus the Angels this season.

The Angels can’t hit McCullers and they really can’t hit anybody right now. Houston is still playing for a lot (homefield) and will be ready to go here tonight. Look for the sweep in a big way, then tune into the end of the Raiders/Redskins game.
